REPLY' TO MR ANSTEY. To the Editor of the “Timaru Herald.;’ Sir.—-I find on reading Mr Anstey s criticism of the speakers at the -Lyceum Thursday, he states: “AYhat a pity Timaru did not make up sooner. Now Sir, with my friends we worked and voted to make Mr Anstey' a member of the Power Board, for at that time he was right out for the Tekapo scheme. Also I have heard him state that Coleridge power would be tinsatisfactory when we did get it; he has proved a true prophet in this instance. After the Power Board was elected, nothing wa.s heard from them about Tekapo, until three days or so before the vote for the loan of £450,000 was taken. They then threw out a sprat, viz. that if the loan was carried they would put aside £SOOO to investigate the Tekapo scheme. The Timaru public did not like the Power Board’s agreement with Mr Templin, and threw out the loan. During the lapse ol time since the formation of the Power Board to the date of the loan proposals, the voters of Timaru had lost confidence in the majority of the members of the Power Board. This also helped to defeat the loan. Air Anstey mentioned that this suicidal jealousy between town and country' is fatal to success. I think the jealousy' he mentioned is only in his imagination. Ho again savs: “AA T ithin ten years at iho fqrthest,'' the duplication of supply from Coleridge, now in progress, will be overtaken by' the demand. Tekapo or some other source must be utilised then, if not at a much earlier date.” Air Anstey runs true to form when he mentions, “AY ithin ten years, or perhaps sooner, Tekapo or some other source must be utilised then.” But who wants to wait ten years before making use of our heritage at Lake Tekapo. Why start to make progress in 1934; what’s wrong with to-day?—l am, etc., R. ALSTON.
