U.A.O.D. INSTALLATION,

The installation meeting of the U. Lodge was held last week. The District President, Bro. J. Allfrey, performed the ceremony. The following officers were installed: Bro. J. Fisher, A.D.; Bro. J. Cook, V. Bro. A. Judson, secretary; Bro. Z. Kay, treasurer; Bro. W. Frisby and Bro. W. King, A.D.B.’s; Bro. N. Johnston and Bro. F. Williams, V.A.B.’s; Bro. R. Jamieson, 1.G.; Bro. W. Phillips, 0.G.; Bro. P. Thomas, minute secretary.

CANTERBURY R.S.A. COMPETITION. The Canterbury District Returned Soldiers’ Association conducted an Anzac Day essay competition, which was open to children of standards V. and VI. in all schools in the Canterbhry education district. The subject chosen for the essay was “Should Anzac Day be observed as a Hoiy Day?” Seventy-eight schools* competed, and the general standard of the essays sent in was of a very high order. The Anzac Banner, which was presented to the R.S.A. some years ago by Mrs G. Rhodes for this purpose, was. this year won by the Temuka District High School for securing the highest aggregate of marks. The banner was formerly held by the Ashburton District High school. In addition to this trophy, the R.S.A. gives a special prize of one guinea to the scholar who secures the highest number of marks for the essay. The special prize this year was won by Miss Verna Dailey, of the St. Albans, School, who secured a total of 95 marks out of a possible hundred.

GOLF. FAIRLIE v. TEMUKA. A friendly match between these clubs was played at Fairlie on Saturday under exceptionally fine weather conditions. The varous games were keenly contested, but the home team won by four gafiies. At the conclusion of they match Mr W. Hughes, president of the Temuka Club, thanked the Fairlie Club for their hospitality during the day. Mr Trotter, of the Fairlie Club, responded. ; Ladies’ Singles. ;

NO LICENSE LEAGUE.

A meeting of the Temuka No License League was held in the Denmark Street Hall on Friday evening,- thirty members being present, and the Rev. Richards was voted to the chair. Mr Russ, the area group organiser, stressed the need for effective organisation, and outlined the proposed policy of the Dominion Alliance. The financial statement was read, showing a substantial credit balance. The following officers were elected: President, Rev. J. R. Heryey; vicepresidents, Rev. F. R. Fell and Mr T. Edwards; secretary, Rev. R. Richards; assistant secretary,, Mr W. 11. T. Brown; treasurer, Mr Gordon Hancox. The local committee consists of these officers, with the addition of Miss Cameron. The meeting approved of tile recommendation that Geraldine, Fairlie and Pleasant Point be given direct representation on the Area Council, but with the reservation that the Temuka League shall have control of the electorate organiser when elected. Mr Russ outlined a scheme for a vote-winning campaign, which commended itself to the meeting, but further consideration was held over to an early meeting of the local executive. The New Zealand Alliance membership campaign was also discussed, but was deferred to the executive to deal with.

NOTES. Owing to the illness of the W.M. Elect, his installation has been postponed until a later date. The Maori Sports Club will hold a social in the Arowhenua on Wednesday evening.
