RAILWAY STRIKE.
lUILWAYMEN’S LOSS.
13/ TAl^^rnnh —Prpsa AsßoWatioc. WELLINGTON, June 13
Raihvaymen have received a hU ?~ prise since the working week ot 4b hours has been reverted to. • Under the conditions which obtained when the old 44-hour week was in ioice before the strike, the men were paid overtime for time worked in excess ot eight hours on any particular day, and in addition to this extra payment on the daily rate, they were also P ; yd overtime, 'if it so happened that the week’s work ran into more than 44 hours. This double payment of overtime on the daily and weekly computation of hours, has now ceased, tor the raihvaymen have discovered that although they may have worked more than eight hours on a particular day, but yet” have not exceeded 48 • hours for the week, they have not received any overtime. The Department, however, is apparently continuing to pay a special rate for night work, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The fact that ordinary overtime is not paid until 48 nouis have been worked is interpreted by the raihvaymen as an indication that by going on strike, they have lost the eight hour day.
