“THE TIMARU HERALD.”

ITS DIAAIOND JUBILEE

BIRTHDAY FELICITATIONS. The diamond jubilee issue of the “Timaru Herald” yesterday, resulted in the receipt, at the office of the “Herald,” of many messages of congratulations from all parts of the district, and orders for extra copies of the paper poured in all day; so that before closing time last night, the complete issue of 10,000 copies had been sold out. In addition to the extra copies, which were bought for posting to friends in New Zealand, a great many were purchased for sending overseas. The information which the'issue gave concerning the early days of Boutli Canterbury, and its fine pictorial record, created quite a lot of interest, not only among the younger members of the present generation, but also among those who had had personal experience of the pioneering days, and during the day many old-time yarns were exchanged. The jubilee issue, containing as it did, 56 pages, formed a bulky volume, and the town runners, as well as those who delivered by car in the country districts, found difficulty in handling their bulky packages. On some of tiie cars it was found impossible to carry sufficient papers in one load, and second trips into AVaimate, Temuka and Pleasant Point districts had to be made. There was a general chorus of approval of tho “Herald’s” enterprise in thus catering for its readers, and the birthday celebrations could not have passed Oft., under happier auspices. The first congratulation to hand yesterday morning was from Air H. C. Bretherton, inspector of the Public Trust, of Dunedin, and in the after--noon the directors of the Grand Picture Company, on the motion of the chairman, Air H. A. Innes-Jones, ■seconded by Air G. R. Al. Jones, passed hearty vote of congratulations to the “Timaru Herald” on its diamond jubilee, aud considered the production of tho jubilee number was in keeping with the importance of the district that the 'paper represented. The headmaster of one of-our local schools, speaking to the in regard to the Diamond Jubilee Number of the “Timaru Herald,” advised them to preserve and carefully look after this production. . The information from a local history point of view, he said, was invaluable, so much so, that he intends to begin teaching from this to-day. ... . , In recognition of the vast amount oi .extra work involved in getting out the special issue, the “Herald” Company intend to entertain the staff of. the paper at a dinner and social evening in the “Stafford” on Saturday night. Our Temuka correspondent writes:— The diamond jubilee number of the “Timaru Herald” was very much appredated in the Temuka district, as was evidenced bv the abnormal demand for the production. A large number of extra copies was ordered by the Temuka agent, who considered that his order would meet all demands, but by noon every copy was sold, and additional consignments were sent for in the afternoon. These also were quickly sold out. The unanimous opinion is that it was a wonderful production, well printed, and beautifully got up, and as a historical and pictorial record ot South Canterbury, would be hard to excel. _
