A Land Mark—Persons who have lived in Timaru for thirty years remember Parr’s mill, a windmill with a tower 70ft. high, built in 1872 on a section on Church Street, a little west of the site of the present Chalmers Church. Its high tower was a landmark visible for many miles in all directions, by sea and land. It makes a conspicuous feature in old photographs of the town, and old residents on seeing one of these pictures say: “What a pity it was to pull it down.” But Timaru is not windy enough to run a windmill for grinding wheat, the processes of which require steady running, day by day and hour by hour, and the mill was not a success and was dismantled. The tower itself stood about twenty years and was then taken down.
