Telephone bureaux were establisned in Timaru in 1851, Temuka and Fairlie 1861, Waimate and Studholme 1864, Geraldine 1865, Pleasant Point and Albury 1913. The railway, begun at Timaru end, was in use as far as Temuka in 18 10. The line was through to Christchurch in 1876, to Dunedin in 1878.
