The period, from the ari'ival of the Strathallan in 1859 to 1879 was indeed a wonderful twenty years in the history of South Canterbury. As the population was under 2000 at the beginning and lean than 20,000 at its close, the amount of permanently useful foundation work accomplished was truly astonishing. And the progress made had included recovery from two great disasters in ’6B—a record flood in February and a great fire in Timaru in December.
