The Opihi river at the Main Road crossing is: very different from what it was before the flood of 1868. The river then consisted of a single deep stream close to the north bank, with fordable bars across it here and there. The pool above the bar wa>' at least a quarter of a mile in length. The Provincial Government appointed a ferryman, whose name was Mc-Kin-ley, and provided a big boat and a scale of charges for ferrying people over. When the river was too high to ford, horsemen crossed in the boat, their horses swimming beside it.
