FLAMES SUBSIDING.

In the early mom- ; IK , n iiu-ong wind suddenly sprang up, •uid the Uanics. which were .still leap•|K, to a great height, threatened iktimor io the Vacuum Oil store on the Tipposite side of the street, in which there were stored over 40,000 cases <<t petrol, approximately 1110 cases of kerosene, and 20,000 cases of labimating oil. The danger to these premLes, however, was lessened by the fact that the front portion of the „tore is used to house lubricating til, which is not nearly of .such tut inilam-,-i Lie nature as the motor-spirits. Nevertheless it was necessary for the Brigade to keep a strict watch on these premises, ig which drifting sparks turmoil a constant source of danger.
As the. day advanced the flames gradually subsided. All day long a dense column oi smoke drifted over the town. ft is probable that he fire will continue, to burn for some tiim yet, but the danger which threatened nearby buildings is past.
