WAIMATE.

HOOK. At the annual concert in aid of the school funds, Mr H. H. Meyer presided over a large attendance. luo school children, under the direction of the headmaster (Mr Holmes), and Mi* John Meyer, presented the operetta, “The Butterfly Queen.” The children who had been carefully trained, camed out their parts without a hitch. Mid those present had the pleasure of witnessing what was undoubtedly the best school performance • ever seen in the district. The principal parts were taken by Miss G. Hayes (Butterfly Queen); Miss T. Steward (Girl Scout!; Miss C. Alexander (Dame Snuffy) : Miss H. Croft (AVood Ogre) ; R. Rose (Boy Scout) ; G. Tiffen and J. Rathgen (Tweedledum and Tweedledee). Die smaller children filled the parts of fairies, wood nymphs, Boy Scouts, and school children. A Waiinate concert party consisting of Miss Lew, Messrs Algie, Simmonds, and Wiseman, assisted with songs s-t intervals between the acts and materially contributed to the success of the evening. Owing to numerous requests, ir, has been decided to give a repeat performance on Tuesday, 17th June, when the proceeds will be given to the Hall funds.

RUGBY SUB-UNION. The weekly meeting of the Waimato Sub-Union was held on Monday even ing. Present.—Messrs R. Clear (in the chair), L. Pegler, R. Eddy, W. Patterson, F. Lundon, G. A. Man Chester, E. Veitch, and the secretary .(Mr A. J. Inkster). Mr Pegler reported that the High School team would bo able .to meet Northern on Thursday next, at 1.3 U p.m. The committee decided that m future, all cars be parked on the eastern side of Queen Street, opposite the Park. The secretary was instructed to interview the Northern Club on the question of procuring jerseys for the trial match, Mr L. Collins, who was injured last season, was granted an extra sum oi 12s 6d towards his expenses. It was decided to purchase twelve more representative jerseys. Mr Manchester was appointed to re present the Union on a committee o sports bodies who will control the use of Victoria Park this season) The secretary was instructed to write to Timaru, Oamaru, and the Hakatara mea, in reference to representative' matches. REFEREES’ ASSOCIATION FORMED. ,

On Monday evening a meeting c : Rugby enthusiasts as held in Mr B. L. Wallis’s shop, to consider the ad visability of forming a Rugby Referees Association in Waimate. About a dozen or twenty were present and M. N. L. Thomas was voted to the chair. After a short discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr J. Menzies, that a Referees’ Association be form ed. • The election of officers resulted President, Mr N. L. Thomas, vice-presi dent. Mr B. L. Wallis; committee. Messrs J. Menzies and D. Thompson , secretary and treasurer, Mr A. J. Inkster.

WAITAO FORKS SALE. There was a small yarding of 505 fats at the Waihao Forks sale yesterday. Prices obtained were : • Fat lambs. —6 at 21s 6d, 30 at 31s 3d, 3 at 32s 6d, 54 at 30s, 9 at 32s 9d, 20 at 295, 18 at 30s Id, 47 at 26s 7d, 33 at 29s Id, 20 at 28s, 17 at 33s lid. Fat ewes. —12 at 18s, 9 at 225, 66 at 32s 9d, 19 at 205,, 28 at'24s 3d, 40 ■at 22s Bd. Fat wethers. —25 at 28s. Stores.— 23 0 and 8-tooth ewes at 29s 6d, 73 ewe lambs at 26s 6d, 80 lambs (mostly wethers) at 21s. CARD MATCH.

An enjoyable card match was play ed on Monday evening between members of the Waimate Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Foresters Lodge, the former proving the winners by 25 games to 20.

CITIZENS’ BALL. The Library Committee met last evening to arrange details for the citizens' ball. It was resolved to give a half-guinea prize to the winning lady and gentleman in the following classes: Most economical, most original, and the best fancy costumes. Offers of special prizes were accepted with thanks from Miss Strong, the Mayoress (Mrs W. E. Evans), Messrs Dash. Thomas, Scott, Nash, and Barford. The home of select and distinctive jewellery.
