THE MAYOR’S LAMENT.

not progressive enough.

At last uiglit’s meeting of the Timaru i3orougli Council tlio Mayor stated that lie very much regretted that the Council iiad decided not to make some provision for subsidising any progressive movement made for the benefit of South Canterbury. H Q was sux*prise that a town* suclx as limaru, with so many natural beauties and facilities for making it a popular place, absolutely refused to provide anything for advertising purposes. He considered that linking up with the Canterbury Progress League was their best method. Caroline Bay showed little improvement till the Caroline Bay Association had taken the work there in hand, ancl even that Association got little support from the Borough Council until the Bay became a payable concern. The removal of the South Canterbury Education Board was largely due to the apathy of the Timaru Borough Council. The death of the South Canterbury Development League was almost entirely due to the neglect of the Timaru members oi that League. The first proposals of the South Canterbury Power Board, which meant so much to this -district, and which would ultimately have, to he carried out, were flatly turned down by the ratepayers of Timaru, and now. another proposal to devise some means of advancing the progress and prosperity of the towns and districts of South Canterbury did not meet with enough support from the Council to set aside a small sum that could he devoted to any approved scheme.
