RUGBY UNION COMPETITIONS

Competition matches, in all grades were resumed on Saturday, after a break of a fortnight. The weather was very fine and the grounds were in excellent order. There was a largo attendance at the Athletic Grounds, whore Old Boys defeated Waihi by 20 to 9, and Celtic and Star played a drawn game. The positions in the premiership competition now are :

OLD BOYS 20. v. "WAIHI 9. Old Bovs kicked off against the sun. The Waihi forwards immediately pieced, W. Mcßride being prominent in a dribbling rush that assailed .ho Blue line. A penalty given lor onside play relieved the position for the town team. W. Lawson opened up in midfield, and--Mathcson, Duncan, ana Fraser handling in a passing bout, which culminated in Eraser scoring a good trv. G. Lawson converted. Old Govs s," Waihi 0. The Wailn forwards returned to the attack and a series cl iine-outs ensued near the Blue line. A. Edgeler secured and made a lightning streak down the line, but v/as well tackled by Mahan. W. Mcßride was responsible for a good dribbling run, hut Parker saved. Duncan secured and opened up a splendid passing rush, with Fraser and Matheson participating, the latter being overhauled bv Scott near the line. 0. Quirkc effected a good save. Mahan also came to light with a good run down the opposite line, going very close before being pulled up. Mathe6on broke away in his own territory, but came to grief when nearly clear. A penalty against Old Boys for offside play gave Waihi an opportunity, hut Scott missed with a kick from the quarter mark. The Waihi pack were controlling the scrums, but bad handling by their inside backs nullified any advantage. From a penalty against tin Blues for a line-out infringement Scott essayed a kick from near halfway, the ball falling short. The Blue forwards, with Gerard and Doull prominent, worked play back to halfway, where another free kick was awarded to the country team, Scott kicking a splendid goal from between the 25 and half-way. .Old Boys 5, Vv’aihi 3. Gerard broke away from a defensive position, and Doull, haijdliug well, opened up a passing bout which removed play to the opposite 25.
