ASHBURTON TROTTTNG CLUB’S WINTER -MEETING.

KOHARA WINS SAPLING STAKES

ONYX’S BRILLIANT VICTORY. The Ashburton Trotting Olub’s winter fixture was held on Saturday on the Racing Club’s course, and attracted a large attendance, The weather was fine hut blustery, a iior’-west gale raging while the opening event wn« being run, and a strong wind prevailing at intervals during the. afternoon. Fortunately there was a calm and mild spell at the time sot down for the Ashburton Handicap, which pro' l need

The cup, which accompanied tne winner s share ol trie stake, was formally presented to ivohara's owner by .Mrs iSieoil, alter tlie president (,Mr Xi. i’. Nieoil) had congratulated Mr Morton and -1. Bryce on their achievement. Tne track was in last condition, and two race records were established during the day. Specula i jou was hardly so brisk as usual, the totalisator investnienis ioi tne day X2(',ioi iUs. tailing short ol last year’s total of £23,i)-L. idle converted trotter i/ecer Bingen, was installed favourite in the Trial Handicap, with Moonlit a good second choice. Beter Bingen, Moonlit and Koval Arcade were rust to show out, anci pacing up the back, they were several lengths clear of Colonel Mac, Logic and Bruce, who were running at the head of the bunch._ The wind steadied the leaders before reaching the turn, where Logie and Bruce joined them. Beter Bingen and Moonlit led into the straight just ill front of Royal Arcade and Bruce, who was looking for an opening. Getting through half a furlong from home, tlic Icmuka-owncd thrcc-vcar-old took charge, and after a good race beat Koval Arcade by hall a length. Peter Bingen being three lengths away, followed by Moonlit, Logie and King Sandy. Medallion Boy was coupled on the machine with Royal Arcade, owing to the capacity of the totalisator being overtaxed, and his few friends participated in the second dividend. Don Massey, Sheila Wilkes and rreeman were the popular selections for the Longboach Handicap, but Don Massey lost half a dozen seconds at the start, and Sheila Wilkes also began badly. Wee Patch led off from Gold Digger and Miss Chudleigh, and at the mile was several lengths clear oi Freeman, Cabin Girl and Red Peter. Freeman took charge at the bend, followed bv Thistlewood and Red leter, and the three turned into tho straight with a useful advantage from Okuti. Thistlewood and Freeman were on terms a furlong from home, but the former broke badly, allowing Treeman to win comfortably by five lengths from Red Peter, who also collared Thistlewood just before reaching the winning post. Neslon Guest was fourth, and Okuti (easing up) fifth. All twentv'Tu-ceptors were geared up for the Ashburton County Handicap, but Prince Pointer (with Heudriksen in the sulky), was backed like a certainty, carrying about three times as much money as Golden Devon, Pearlre Chimes or Brutus, the next three in demand. Dalnahine was first to break the. line, followed by Harbour Light and Dollv Dillon. Going past the stand Golden Devon, Dalnahine and Prince Pointer were almost in lino, with Halhour Light aiul TSowiy Logan close up. Leaving the straight Dolly Dillon was showing the way to Prince Pointer and Dalnahine. Streaming along the back Prince Pointer and Dolly Dillon wore in charge, with Golden Devon and Dalnahine next. . Prince Pointer and Golden Devon were well clear at the homo turn, and led into the straight from a closing-up field. Just outside the distance a dozen horses seemed to have a chance, the two leaders being under pressure. A furlong from home Childe Pointer shot through in the middle, attended by Logan Lou, and this pair looked like returning tire dividends, when Onyx came with one of her characteristic runs on the extiemo outside, and catching Chilclo 1 ointei fifty yards from home, won by a couple of ieiigths in the great time of 4AG 4-o. Childe Pointer defeated Logan Lou by over a length, Pearlie Chimes being three lengths away fourth,, and Dalnahinc fifth. The winner paid a thumping dividend, but her success was generally popular. Princess Zoe cracked up at the start, and Countryman broke at the end ol' two furlongs. This cleared the way for the Sapling Stakes, for which a field or eight two-year-olds naraded. Kohava was always favourite, and finished up an odds on chance. Nelson Tasker and Gibraltar also being well supported. Tho field moved oil' at the first attempt, all striking a gait smartly, except Joy Bells ami Weitilo. • Nelson Tasker, Gibraltar and Jingal led past the stand four lengths clear of Kohara, and there was not much change until ihe mile posi was passed. Approaching tho six furlong peg, Kohara joined tho leaders, and at the five Nelson Tasker, Kohara and Gibraltar drew away from the field. Nelson Tusker led into the straight from Kohara, with Gibraltar close up on the inside. Kohara took Nelson Tasker’s measure before reaching the distance, and a bit further on Gibraltar came fast on the outside. Joining the favourite a couple of hundred vards from home, Gibraltar got his head in front, but under pressure appeared to stumble and broke, allowing Kohara to win comfortably at tho end by four lengths, Nelson Tasker being three lengths further* back.. General Bingen, who was some distance away, collected the £SO attached to fourth place. Kohara, who established a time record for the race, made tho third successive Sapling winner for tho Morten-Bryee combination. Gibraltar, a fine looking gelding by Nelson Bingen, ran a bit greenly, but- looks certain to turn out well. Nelson Tasker showed plenty of speed, but failed at the crucial stage, possibly being short of work as a result of a recent accident.

The Bryce bracket Kiribmgi-Rollick-ing Belts was the favourite selection in the Acton Handicap, with Kate 'Thorpe and Lady Koekaway in greatest request of the remaining 29. Percy Dillon made play from Lord Clan, and turned into the back straight just in iront of Kate Thorpe (who made up ground smartly after hobbling at the start). the loading pair held their places to the end, Percy Dillon dclcating the Oraritiained filly by a couple of lengths, with Albert Logan, who came from tlio bunch, four lengths away, third. Drealr.alion had to cover a lot of ground, and did well to finish fourth. .Rollicking Bells was fifth. Kanuknot and Osier Beauty were well placed at the home turn .and then iailed to run on. Indian Child lost her driver, but J. Wallis escaped injury. Money Spider was backed like a moral “for the two-mile trotters’ race, the Otago gelding and tlio Nelson candidate, Tim Wood, being entrusted with the bulk of the money. Queen Ida began very smartly, and soon established a big lead from Greyvood and Araby. Trotting past the stand Queen Ida ■was almost a hundred yards clear of Araby, Greywood and Money Spider, and when siie reached tlici six furlongs sho was about a furlong ahead of Araby, Freeman and Money Spider-. Rounding the bend, Money Spider gave chase to the leader, but could make little impression on her, Queen Ida winning easing up by uhout fifteen lengths irom A\ oodlass, who came wiLli u great mil and .seemed second money by a length from 1 mtoi Timmerman, who also linishcd strongly Money Spider and Freeman, who both broke near home, wore the next, pan to finish. The win was the lmllowe.st of the duv, ami the dividend exceeded a score. 'Tim Wood failed to show up at any part of th» trip. Toiler!lfo and Lady Swilhin had the call m the betting cm the Winter Handicap, only iM separating tho pan on the machine, Nelson fame allowed the wav round fhe, first bond to Cummin. Vera Logan and Tonorifle. 1 mice Dnrl.v improved his position going up lho hack and at. the curve tho order pas Nelson Fame, Commie, Nora Leu an, Prince Derby, Golden Devon

and Tcncriffe, with little between them. Nelson Fame was done with once the straight was reached, and a turlong from fiome Golden Devon or Prince Derby looked like supplying the winner. A little further on, fiowever, Lady Swithin .showed up near ■the outside, and linistimg brilliantly, the Ashburton mare won by a length and a-half from Golden Devon, wlio beat Ben Ohau by over a length. Prince Derby was fourth, then came Man-o’-War, who put in a wonderful run over the last half inilc._ AA . Warten drove the winner, D. Warren having a poisoned arm. In the Farewell Handicap Hydaspcs was entrusted with about £o more than Blair Audubon, Lady Embrace, the third choice, being also well backed. •Oaknut shot to the front from the mil of the flag, and ran round the bond tit tended by Blair Audubon, Prince Swithin and Hydaspcs. At the top of tho straight it appeared as if Hydaspes might catch the loader, but the l'avour- <■ ic failed to come on, and Oaknut won i-asily by four lengths from Lady Kmorace, the Oamiiru mare having to be ridden out to defeat Downcast by halt a length. Hydaspcs was a length further "jack fourth. Oaknut, who is owned in Southland, was steered by his young trainer, M. J 3. Edwards, who rode a very confident race. The Betel Nut gelding is smoother in his gait than “formerly, and once he hit the straight, the double-figure dividend which his supporters collected, was never in jeopardy.
