CAROLINE BAY ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL REPORT.

Tlie following is the report to be presented at the annual meeting of the Caroline Bay Association on Thursday

JC “Your Committee have much pleasure in submitting the following leportl and balance sheet for the year ended March 31, 1924, showing a credit balance at the Bank of £361 6s (id, after having expended £BB7 3s 9d on Bay improvements, and £135 -11 ssd on furnishings. Unfortunately the pavilion was destroyed by fire on April 21, 1923. The Hall, as re-erected by the Bgrougli Council, is a groat im- ’ provement on the old one, the dancing floor having been extended 15 feet, and the dressing rooms and staging are more convenient and commodious. The sun verandah or. the north sido is also greatly appreciated. The reclaiming and laying out in lawns of that portion of the beach- south of the bathing sheds, the erection of the sod wall and lamps and kerbing, developed into a larger and more costly scheme than the Committee at first anticipated, but the results more than justified the amount expended, namely, £BS7 3s 9d. The grass on the new lawns is now growing fast, and during the coming year should be much appreciated, besides adding to the beauty of the Bay. The lights at night have a very pleasing effect. The committee were greatly assisted in meeting the cost of the improvements by receipt of a donation of £172 10s from the Trustees of the Rhodes bequest, and also by donations of £5 each from a number of citizens for lamps, amounting to £llO, for which the donors have the Association’s. thanks and appreciation. The Committee regret that during the year they could not carry out the intended improvements to the children’s playing facilities, but hope that the incoming committee will give this theft first attention, and provide for same out oi the funds in hand. “The Carnival Committee are to be congratulated on their successful running of this year’s carnival, both for the splendid financial result attained and for the amusement provided for the visitors. The Committee’s success is all the more pleasing as it was attained without the assistance of professional organisers, and without the aid of such profitable side-shows as the chocolate wheel and surprise packets, which were not included in thsi year’s programme. The net profit from the carnival was £507 8s 2d, The Committee wish to thank the shop-keepers and other residents for their numerous gilts, and to especially thank all those who so materially assisted in making the carnival entertaining and profitable. “The Association opened the new Bay hall with a most successful ball, and the Committee desire to express their thanks* to Miss Kathleen Young and her band of helpers who so capably ran the ball, which showed a profit of £22 ,‘3s 9d. This profit paid for the crockery purchased for the new hall. The committee purchased a new piano for £IOO, paying a deposit of £SO received from the Insurance Company for the loss of tho one destroyed by the fire. Tho remaining’ £SO is a liability to Messrs C. Begg and Co. “Tho Borough Council have again had a very successful year on the Bay, having received record takings amounting to £944 4s lid from the bathing sheds, £270 Is 2d from tho tennis courts, and £7B from the car stand. During the year the Bay proved more popular than ever for picnics and excursions, and there is no doubt it is hv far the best asset- Timaru has as an attraction for visitors. The Committee takes this opportunity of expressing their satisfaction with tlm work dono by Mr Gibson (caretaker ot the Bay) and his staff. During the carnival tho caretaker was of great assistance, and it is very evident that he has tho interests of the Bar ac heart.”
