ST. JOHN’S FAIR.

SUCCESSFUL EFFORT.

CHURCH FUNDS AUGMENTED. The Ladies’ Guild of St. John’s, IVaiiti Road, yesterday held , the annual fair in the Church, when the result was decidedly satisfactory and added a substantial sum to the church funds. St. John’s .is fortunate in having such a loyal, whole-hearted band of workers as that comprising the Ladies’ Guild, and the stalls' yesterday were stocked with an endless variety of articles which bore eloquent testimony to the industry and uniiagging labours of the Guild members. The hall was neatly laid out for the occasion, and the stalls were ranged round the building in a manner which displayed to the best advantage the goods on sale. More favourable weather than that experienced yesterday could not have been wished for, and in the afternoon the fair was the rendezvous of a very large number of. church members and friends. Tho stall-holders were kept extremely busy attending to tho wants of their patrons, while tho several competitions which were conducted met ready and liberal support. As a lesult of tho afternoon’s business the sum of • £TOO was drawn, and in the evoning, from -7.30 until the fair closed, there was a further rush of business,, the stalls being practically depleted. The organisers of the fair —Mesdaines Huddleston and Webber,—along, with their willing band of assistants, are to bo heartily congratulated on the success of ’their effort; whih resulted in .the sum of £l6O being collected to augment the church funds.

The stallholders were as follows: — Produce, Mesdames Hay and Saunders; work —Mesdaines Jones, Harris, Rickman; fancy—Mesdame3 Bowe, Gerard, Porritt and Revell; children’s, Misses Cox (3); sweets —Mesdames Bridgewater, Adams, and Pearson; books— Mesdames Stubbs, Hassell, Battison; refreshments, Mesdames Muir and Stringfellow. The winners of competitions were as follows—Christmas cake, Mrs Cooper ; block of soap, Mrs Smail; silk jersey, Mrs Jones; silk dress, Mrs Shirt-cliff; ; flower bowl, Mrs Hurst; table centre, : Msr T. E. Holdgate;.spaniel dog, Mrs j Vennel; doll’s house. Mrs Wigley; J first prize, bagatelle—Miss Mary Bridges (hearthrug); second prize, bagatelle—Mrs Brown (hat box).
