T Sadd, Commissioner of Crown Lands for Otago, will retire at the end af next month.

The death is announced from Wanganui of Mr William Holden, at the advanced age of 86 years. Mr Holden was well known in commercial circles, •but it was as a musician that he was best known.

A London cable message announces that Lieut.-Commander James Mansfield, nephew of Lord Sandhurst, has been loaned to the New Zealand Navy and sails on the-25th October. He was navigator of, the Weymouth when a torpedo blew off the rudder at Duraw.o. Mr E J. Hulbert, of Wellington, has arrived in Christchurch to establish a branch office of the Government treasury there. An old Chnstehurch boy (a son of a former Mayor), Mr Hulbeit is best known amongst returned soldiers as Lieutenant-Colonel Hulbert. In the New South Wales Assembly yesterdav Mr J. T. Lang (Leader of the Labour Party) asked the Premier whether the Cabinet had considered the advisabilitv of appointing an Australian Governor or abolishing the post altogether. Sir George Fuller replied in the negative in each instance, and said the Cabinet had requested the Imperial authorities to appoint a Governor.

The Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Minister of Customs, Industries and Commerce, and Miss Stewart arrived in Christchurch from Wellington yesterday. In the morning the Minister met the members of the Wheat Control Board, and ,afterwards inspected the displays in ' connection with Industries Week. In the afternoon he attended a meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Industrial Association, and in the evening he was present at a social gathering tendered in his honour by the. Association. The Minister leaves by the express for the south to-day for Temuka, where he will spend the weekend with his, sister, Mrs G. W. Armitage. On Monday he will go on -o Dunedin. —Press Association.
