The New South VVales fifteen defeattd the Combined Universities by 33 points to 13, in the presence of four thousand spectators, after a lively game bristling with individual tit-bits, but lacking in the tense situations of competitive contests. . In the first half the Universities led by 16 to 10, Thomas, Diack and Hart getting tries, of which Diack converted two, and Nothling kicking a penalty goal for Varsities, while for New South vYales Raymond and Wogan secured tries, Mingay converting both. In the second spell New South Wales opened the game and added 23 points, while Universities registered 3. Mingay, Marrott, Erasm'us, Raymond (2), ana Wogan scored tries, Mingay converting one and lacking a penalty goal, while Foote got a try for the ’Varsities. WANGANUI DEFEAT TARANAKI. NAPIER, Monday, Hawke’s Bay to-day successfully defended the Ranfurly Shield in the first match of tlio season, against Wairarapa, in heavy, wet weather, winning by a penalty goal and a try to nil, after a dogged forward contest.
