Alto Chimes cut a couple of seconds off his previous best time in the Faparua Handicap at the Canterbury Park fixture, and still had to put up with second place. His 4.28 4-5, however, gives him the right of entry for the Trotting Cup. The Washdyke stables had a good day at Dunedin yesterday. P. T. Hogan saddled up two winners, Mandrake and Master Peter, and another brace of dividend-payers in Marmont and Osterman. J. Boyd supplied the winner of the cot. -ludIHBIMWIMM-'

mg event with Carmine. Mandrake has the reputation. of being one of the most disappointing animals in the country on the fiat, t where he refused to reproduce in ■) public the brilliant work he form- | erly showed on the training track. I When in F. D. Jones’s stable he was taken on the southern ip with Amythas, and followers of the trainer lost on Mandrake all the money they made on the champion. Lately, I however, the I-Iymettus gelding has I shown very consisten form over fences, and prior to winning the big hurdle race at Wingatui yesterday his record in jumping races was two wins, tw r o seconds and three thirds in seven starts. Vilo is proving something of a gold-mine for her owner-trainer, and looks like almost topping the winners for the season in the light harness division. The time registered by the Waimate mare yesterday ■was not fast, but the win will probably place her on a 4.26 mark in future and make her the back-marker among South Island pacers. Mary Bruce, who effected a surprise win in the Great Northern Steeplechase, is an aged mare by Robert the Bruce—Miss Ethel. She had no previous form to recommend her for such a task. Dick, who acted as runner-up, is owned in Blenheim, and won one of the big A.J.C. steeplechases last year in the moderate company in New South Wales. Dialogue, who was narrowly beaten by Purser in the Winter Stakes at Randwick, is a son of Demosthenes — Tete-a-tete, who was sold as a yearling by his breeder, Mr T. H. Lowry, for 1700gns. The purchaser, Mr | A. Hordern, did not find him a very e profitable investment, and passed him | on to the Rosehill trainer W. Booth. | t
