WAIMATE.

[own correspondent-} INQUEST. An inquest concerning the death, of Catherine line, of Tripp’s Settlement, Geraldine, was held before the Coroner (Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) in tho Waixnate Courthouse on Saturday afternoon. Sergeant O’Connell conducted the inquest for the police. Arthur Henry Itae, labourer, residing at Tripp’s Settlement, Geraldine, gave evidence that the body viewed in the presence of the Coroner was that of his wife, Catherine Itae, aged 33 years. Deponent stated that deceased came to Waimate last Wednesday to visit relatives at Painstown. She had been receiving medical treatment for a number of years, and was last attended by Dr. Paterson at Geraldine. Deceased complained of illness on Friday night, and retired at about II o’clock. Later witness asked her how she felt, and she said that she did not feel so bad. His wife did not speak again. Upon tiying to awake her in the morning he discovered that she was dead. He sent for Dr. Hayes immediately. Edwin Ciune Hayes, medical practitioner, stated that he received a call at 6 a.m. to proceed to Andrew Robinson’s, at Painstown. On arrival he found Mrs Rae m bed, and hfe extinct. Death had apparently taken place about three hours, previously. As the result of inquiries mto the history of the case witness came to the conclusion that deceased had been suffering from goitre and heart disease. He considered that death was due to cardiac failure, due to ex-ophtlialmic disease and heart disease. • A verdict in accordance with the medical evidence was returned.

BILLIARDS. There was a large 'attendaface of billiard enthusiasts at tho Arcade Saloon on Thursday night to witness a billiard match between Clark McConachy and a local amateur. McCouachy conceded 450 in a 750 game, and the game finished with the scores 750-599 m favour of the champion. McConachy’s best breaks were 100, 112, 85, 59, 46 aud 43. The local player’s best was 27. A snooker match with Mr \ esberg resulted in another win for McCcnachy, with the scores 103-28. At the conclusion of the games the New Zealand champion gave. an interesting exhibition of trick shots. A cue competition was also held, and was won by Mr Allen, with a score of 25. makikThi. A very enjoyable dance, given by the bachelors and spmsters of the district, was held in the Makikihi Hall on I<ndav evening. There were oyer one hundred couples present, including visitors from Timaru and M aimate, and dancing to the music of Miss Morgan’s orchestra continued until the earlv hours. Extras were contributed by Misses Smith, Park and Callaghan, “nd Mr Palmer. Mr J- Simmons was M.C. . LIBRARY COMMITTEE.' A special meeting of the Library Committee was held on Friday night to renort progress in connection with• the forthcoming citizens’ ball, to beheidm aid of the library funds. The s9*>--com-mittee reported that the Olympia Hall had been secured for June 28, and that Miss Morgan’s orchestra had been engaged.
