Williamson, Avho also annexed the Greenlane Steeplechase with No Bother.

Two Washdyke-trained horses, Carmine and Ostertnan follOAved Vice-Royal home in the. Winter Welter at Dunedin, but the winner had such a pull in the Aveights that this form may not Avork out correctly on the other days of the meeting. The Trili’ord stable Avas sweet on the chances of Mythology, Malincourt ami Gamecock on the first day at Dimedin, and two of them raced up to expectations. Malincourt failed to get round in the St. Clair Steeplechase, but Gamecock Avon nicely and Mythology Avas defeated by only a neck.

Guncase’s Avin in the Brighton Handicap at Dunedin proved that his second day running at Oamaru AA'as not his correct form. The Calibre gelding threatens to develop into the big gun of the Washdyke stable, and Avith three Avins in a month has made a handsome return of his purchase price. The Winter Welter at Wingatui proved the good thing it looked to be for the Southland gelding ViceRoyal; Avho got in at the minimum after winning three .races pn ;end in his home province. ; At Ohmaru Mr J. E. Henrys assessed him at more than a stone and a half higher than the Dunedin weight-adjuster, who has given the horse a rise of 241bs in to-day’s AA r elter. Will Oakland and Mythology were popularly believed to be the besttreated pair in the D.J.C. Tradesmen’s Handicap, and they finished second and third, having to strike their colours to the Southland filly Laughing Eyes (a daughter of the Derby winner Balboa). Laughing Eyes, who is a half-sister to Listening Post, showed a lot of promise a feAV months back, but she ran very badly at the last meeting at Washdyke, and must have come on a lot in the interval.

The Auckland Racing Club made a departure on Saturday in the division of the Jervois Handicap. Instead of splitting the £SOO stake and running the top and bottom halves of the handicaps in sections, the stewards gave the full stake for each division, the odd numbers in the acceptance list making one field and the even numbers the other. If the track is in good order today at Addington Happy Voyage will be sent against his own mile record of 2min 4 l-ssee. The champion showed in a work-out last week that he is in good order for the task, as he paced a mile in 2.9 without being extended. It is reported that if the conditions are favourable W. J. Tomkinson expects to drive Happy Voyage to a 2.3 mark. The Great Northern Hurdles winner Kohu is an aged gelding by Espartero—Te Puia, bred by the late W. Douglas. He has been fancied for big jumping races in past seasons, and more than once looked to have fair prospects of success until a fall put him out of court. He was a starter in the last Grand National Steeplechase, but came down halfAvay through the race. Kohu is engaged in the Great Northern Steeples to-day Avith 10.5.

The Birthday Handicap winner Urgency has been a much-discussed animal during recent Aveeks. When lie ran aAvay with the Amberley Cup at Riccarton allegations Avere openly made that the race Avas not run on its merits and that the Avinner was not called upon to face much opposlon. The gelding’s trainer, F. D. Jones, disagreed with this view, and believed him to be unbeatable in the Ashburton Cup. When Urgency collapsed at the end of a mile this was advanced as proof that the Amberley Cup Avas a “jockeys’ race.” Saturday’s form makes it fairly evident that he Avon at Riccarton because he was the best horse in the race at the Aveights. Pamplona, winner of the Otago Steeplechase, is a seven-year-old gelding by Pallas—Estella, consequently a full brother to Palencia and half-brother to the National Avinner Lochella. When the Aveights appeared Palencia was picked out as one of the best treated of the field, being asked to alloAV General Petain only one pound for a decisive defeat at Washdyke. When Palencia Avas alloAved to drop out in favour of Pamplona and Hard Hit the former’s

prospects Avere freely canvassed. Pamplona’s first essay at the jumping business Avas made in the hunters’ hurdles at Riccarton a couple of years ago, when he finished second to the Waimate gelding Ready, Avho won by a head after a slogging finish.

This is nob flic usual time of the yeai , for spring blossoms, but a settlci near ■, Morrinsvflle lias not only had profuse j blossoms on apple trees but also small ! fruit are noAV appearing. His strawberry plants have also on them ripe fruit. The extremely mild ivintor so

That children should be made to eat! lirad crusts in order that they might' learn to breathe properly was advocated j by Dr. W. H. Simpson in a Red Cross \ lecture at Wellington (says the “Even-t ing Post”) ; at least, that teas the purport of his remarks. Discussing the causes of mouth-breathing, Dr. Simpson stated that in children the most likely cause Avas some form of obstruction in the nose, most commonly adenoids. All children had adenoids to a greater or less extent, but Avhetlier there Avas obstruction or not Avas determined by the general shape of the nose and throat, if the jaw Avas. narroAV, the palate highly arched, the nose Avas j narrow, and there Avas not sufficient airway, Avith the result that the mouth Avas used for breathing. The mouth hung open, the weight of the louei | jaw compressed the palate, preA-enting j development, and there was loss or the j moulding influence of the tongue _oii ; the upper jaw. The Avay of prevention . was the Avay of development of the , jaw, and that depended on the use ot the teeth. From early infancy elm--dren must be given hard tilings to cJieu, such as toasts and crusts, and as Die;- , grew older less pap and more haul food , must be included m their diet. .1 a_ ents must constantly correct and mdency to mouth-breathing, and the earbor the correction the more chance it liac of being successful.
