LIQUOR BAN.

Eighteenth Amendment. U.S. PROTESTS. BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN.—COPYRIGHT New York, May 31. An Albany telegram says that an interesting development, arising out of the New York State Legislature’s repeal of the prohibition enforced law occurred to-day, when Governor Sniit., before deciding whether to sign or veto the repeal, held open court to obtain the views of both drys and wets, who conducted bitter campaigns'. In view of the fact that the governor’s action will be likely to have national influence, 100 organisations and clubs sent delegations, wherein women were largely conspicuous. On both sides vigorous arguments occurred.

The delegates presented Mr Samuel Gompers’ letter to tho Governor, denouncing the Volstead Act, and declaring that no doubt the riper judgment of the American people on prohibition will force next Congress to pass reasonable modifications of the prohibition law. Governor Pincliot, of Pennsylvania, speaking yesterday on the famous Civil War battlefield of Gettysburg, declared that loyalty to the Constitution was attacked by those who would set aside the eighteenth amendment. The issue was now as it was ,in 1863, when slavery threatened the Union. “It is our task to overthrow those who attempt to impose the black disgrace of nullification on the people, and on the Union which you preserved.” The Governor declared that he wouV, use every power inherent in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to vindicate the people’s loyalty to the constitution “and to crush the base effort of pleasure and profit seekers to bring contempt upon the laws and institutions which make us prosperous and free.”

The audience was composed almost completely of Civil War veterans.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
