LAMPOON ON THE PRINCE.
Mr Beerbohm’s Reply. PICTURE BOUGHT BY ACTOR. BY CABLE—DRESS ASSi>. -,' , OPYRIGH,T (Received 6 p.m., May 1.) London, May 31. Owing to strong opposition to Mr Max Beerbohm’s caricatures of the Prince of Wales, and also King Edward, who is represented as an angel, hese are being withdrawn. This action lias been taken in deference to a letter which Mr Beerbohm has written to the exhibitors wherein he states: “I gather from the' newspapers that certain drawings are likely to shock the susceptibilities of the public. No question of principle is involved. It is one of taste. The drawings were conceived in the spirit of light-hearted fantasy, but if the public is likely to regard them as seriously unkind, even disloyal, T think it would be well to avoid misunderstanding by removal.” The caricature of the Prince of Wales has been purchased by Sir Gerald du Maurier, tho actor, for 40 guineas. He considers it extremely funny and inoffensive, and would like to present it to the Prince if he knew him better.
