The Committee, in conclusion, thanked the members tor their support, and hoped they would further the interests of the institute by introducing new members. The Treasurer (Mr W. Hughes) submitted the. balance sheet, which showed a credit of £24 19s sd. On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr Fenn, the report and balance sheet were adopted without any discussion. At the annual meeting of the Mechanics’ Institute the matter of a new building was, again brought up by the President (Mr J. T. Smart). He said that the present building was praotioally tumbling down, and something must be done soon. One of the town councillors had told him that if a Rest Room was incorporated in the new building scheme the Council would probably be sympathetic. Another suggestion was to include a hall to accomodate, say, 250 persons. The gentleman who had made this, suggestion was Mr Burnett, member for the 1 district, and he was willing to contribute several hundreds of pounds of this scheme was adopted. Mr Burnett had. not stated a definite amount, but from what was said the amount would be in the vicinityof £SOO. Plans were on the table for a new building, comprising a hall, library, rest room, and librarian s residence, but in bis ; (the speaker s) opinion they were too elaborate and would be too costly. If the hall was deleted from the plan this would greatly reduce the cost, and perhaps Mr Burnett would still consent to make the donation: but' ho knew that Mr Burnett much preferred the bigger scheme. After full discussion, Mr Hughes said that the Council was composed of bustness men, and they wanted a businesslike proposal. He would niove that it should me a recommendation to the incoming committee that they should, approach the Council and state that they were willing-to raise £I2OO ,and ask what the Council was prepared to do.
