CHAMPION BELT BATTLE

RIFLE SHOOTING. TRENTHAM MEETING. NEARING THE FINISH. PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The keen nip in the air this morning betokened the presence of the frosty advance guard of autumn. It also presaged a gloriously fine day—one of the best since the shooting commenced. Tlio promise was fulfilled from the spectators’ point of view, but there was a fly in the eiptment for riflemen. As the morning progressed a treacherous right wind developed, and though the first men down at 800 yards of the Otago Match liad a fair run in practically a dead calm, the later ones were hard put to it to keep on the target, and many frequently got off it. When the 800 yards was finished the 900 yards stage of the Otago Match and the single range Taranaki Match (ten shots at 1000 yards) were taken simultaneously, half firing on each of the two adjoining ranges. The wind by now was in full charge, and though occasionally a man got through in a good patch, the majority found the struggle au unequal one, and their cards showed many misses.

Butler (Karori) got a possible at 800 yards, and this was the only one at these long ranges. At times the mirage ran" with extraordinary persistency, making the targets appear dancing above the gun sights. Altogether the day furnished one of the best examples of how reallv perverse Trentliam can be. _ " With the completion of the Taranaki Match, leaving one (the Hawke’s Bay, ten shots at 900 yards) to be fired, tomorrow morning, the following are leading for inclusion in the King’s Fifty to fire for the belt to-morrow afternoon (the possible up to now is 500): —
