ARKANSAS RIOTING. STRIKERS BEING FLOGGED. EXPELLED BY YIGILANTS. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright, (Received 10 p.m., January 19.) NEW YORK, Jan. 18. At Harrison (Arkansas), mob law is spreading'. ' More striking rail way men are being' flagged in several towns in Northern Arkansas, and others have been ordered to ieave the district by a citizens’ committee, which is heavily armed. At Marion, in connection with the Herrin massacre trial, the jury has retired.—A., and N.Z. Cable.
THE HERRIN MASSACRE. By Cable—-Pross Association —Copyright. (Received midnight, January 19.) NEW YORK, Jan. 13. At the Herrin trial, in the presence of 600 spectators, . Judge liar troll, summing up, said.: “ Iris murder or nothing. .It is not against the law of Illinois for a man to mine coal without belonging to the United Mine Workers of America, and if a man is assaulted and killed., therefore, and there is no other reason, the killing is unlawful. > You are to fix a penalty of life imprisonment or a minimum term of 14 years, if you find any, or -all the defendants guilty. If one of the accused men committed the crime and other defendants stood by, and aided, or encouraged the crime, it is your duty to find all the defendants guilty. ’ ’ The epidemic of lawlessness and mob violence has caused • the authorities in three Southern States to take measures to prevent mobs from seizing the reins of Government. The Arkansas . Legislature h preparing’ to investigate the lynching of one striker, and the flogging of others by armed citizens, and Louisiana . officials are continuing’ investigations into the Ku-Klux Klan reign of terror, which culminated in the Merrouge murders. In Texas, a Grand Jury has begun to probe the identity of masked men who flogged a man and a woman. —A. and N.Z. Cable. .
PECULIAR TRIBUNAL. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. (Received 0.45 a.m., January 20.) NEW YORK, .Jan. 19. According to a Harrison message, Circuit Judge Shinn said that the so-called Citizens’ Court', which wa-s operating behind closed doors to the inquisition of strikers, was working under his authority. The Judge refused to explain the unusual situation, beyond saying that the Citizens’ 'Committee was uncler oath. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
