Tlile “City Fathers” of Timaru are likely to deprive themselves of a fair amount of revenue unless they comply with the Magistrate’s suggestion thrown out last week to put notices of parking places in such a manner that visitors to the town cannot help seeing them. At the sitting of the Court yesterday there was quite a number of cases called in which the defendants had left cars unattended in the streets, but as they were not residents of Timaru, and could not he expected to know where the recognised parking places were, no fines were imposed, and costs alone were exacted. At the complimentary social which was tendered to Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., in Fairlie on AVednesday night, the following contributed to the concert programme : —Miss Smith, Miss M. Grieve, Miss Hitehins, and Messrs A. Wotherspoon, N. Earl, McNeill, Tennant, and J. Dick, the last-named being introduced by the chairman as “the. Harry Lauder of the Mackenzie.” Music for the dance wa9 supplied by Miss Morgan’s band, ' and Mr H. Munro acted as Master of Ceremonies. A special vote o-f thanks was passed to the Fairlie Pipe Band for having played the guest of the evening to the Fairlie Public Hall, where the social was held. The social was well arranged, and wub a complete success. A grand fancy dress hall will he held on Thursday evening next in the Caroline Bay Hall to end. up the big drive in aid of the Caroline Bay improvement funds. Substantial prizes will be offered, and t*e proceeds, as usual, will go to improving Timaru’s scenic asset. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Timaru Lodge of Oddfellows, Manchester Unity, was held last Wednesday night. Bro. W. Tonkin presided over a splendid attendance. One candidate was elected and duly initiated. The sick report showed that sickness was about normal. It was resolved that next ordinary meeting shall be a summoned one and deal with notices of motion covering the valuation surpluses. A special meeting will thresh out these notices next Wednesday- night and draft recommendations. One of the U.F.S. Picnic Committee gave details of the excursion to Oamaru on January 27. Reports indicate that the excursion will he a record one. A visitor from Loyal Pride of Kaitangata gave much information about the working of the Order in the Otago district. Accounts amounting to £33 18s 6d were passed for payment, including one maternity claim. H. Allchurbh and Co. wish to draw attention to their change of advertise\ment concerning two good propositions in house property.
