The Duke of Portland, addressing Iris tenants, prophesies the wholesale closure of many 'liistorio homes in _ England, owing to inability to maintain them. The ovvors aro seeking humbler homes. Tho Duke said ho was certain that his successors would bo unable to live at Welbec-k Abbey. Since the armistice more than a score of great titled landowners have been forced to sell a portion of their ancestral acres, including tho Dukes of Sutherland and Westminster. Hundreds of thousands of acres, worth millions of pounds, have, changed hands, mainly owing to tho economic situation.
