THE SPRINGBOKS. iifEPART FOR~SOUTHLAND. The South African team left for Invercargill yesterday ■ by the first express, and will play the holders of the Ranfurly Shield at Rugby Park to-morrow. A large number of people assembled to bid them farewell, including the president and other officials of the Rugby Union. The visitors were sincere in their expressions of gratitude for the kindness shown them in Timaru, of which their memories were wholly pleasurable. They describe their entertainment here as the most enjoyable of their tour, and were unanimous in the view that the Timaru ground was the best they had yet played on in New Zealand. Though they do not under-estimate the task before .them in the Tests, they speak very hopefully of their prospects of emerging victorious from their first contest for what they believe to be the Rugby championship of the world, Yesterday morning Mr T. B. Pienaar, captain of the team, who in private life is headmaster of a school in Capetown, with two other members ox the party, visited the Boys’ High. School, and was shown over the institution by Mr W. Thomas. The South African was keenly interested in the work and recreations of the pupil:;, being particularly impressed with t?/e school uniform and the open-air dormitories, as well as with the lung power of the boys, who gave the Springbok men a rousing reception.

Great interest was taken in the final town game of the schools competition, played between Waimataitai and High School Preparatory at the Athletic Grounds yesterday, before about 600 / spectators, who were rewarded by a fine display of Rugby. Waimataitai immediately set up a strong attack, throwing the ball about freely. They booked it in every scrum, but good tackling by the High School backs stopped several dangerous rushes before Beckett raced round and scored behind the posts. Provan’s kick went over, but touched an opponent before doing so, and the spell ended Waimataitai 3, High 0. Both sides started determinedly

[ in the second spell, and one man on j each side had to leave the field. Wai- | mataitai continued passing throughj out the spell, losing the ball time ; after time near the goal line. With j ten minutes to go Carlton, who had returned after being hurt, followed >up fast and scored In the corner, j The Yellows continued to attack, but j failed to increase the score. Waimai taitai 6, High 0. Mr P. Tutty was j referee. | A feature of the game was the deadiy.tackling of both sides, 'yVaimataitai smothering their opponents on J every occasion, while School kept j down what might have been a high i score. For High, Kirkland was easily the best back, while Davies, Baxter, and Jones were the best of ihe forwards. All the Waimataitai forwards were good, and Rodger, Home, and Provan did some clever passing in the backs. McKeague, a promoted junior, played excellently at full.
