LONDON, Aug. •>- The Australians are playing a return match at Liverpool with Lancashire. who were beaten in .Inly by an innings. Lancashire batted first, but made only 100. There was rain overnight, and during the morning, and the. ground was sloppy at the start. Play was delayed till 1.3 0. Armstrong won the toss, and sent Lancashire to the wickets. The weather was then sunny and breezy, and the attendance 5000. Gregory, Mailey, Oldfield, and Ryder were omitted from the Australian side.

Makepeace and I-lallows opened to McDonald and Armstrong, the hall cutting through the turf. The batsmen were careful, and the scoring was slow.

With 2G on the hoard, Makepeace lost his wicket, getting his leg before to McDonald. Tydesley and Barnes fell to the same bowler after the addition of 6 runs. At luncheon the score was 3 for 32.

On resuming, Lloyd immediately went without scoring. Hallows’s end came when he was 37, caught and howled by McDonald. Pie played a useful but somewhat lucky innings. When 30 he sent an easy return to McDonald, who held it, hut in tossing it up threw the ball to the ground. Five for 73.

Hallows’ and Kenyon’s partnership was the only bright patch in the innings. They put on 42. . Kenyon played a lively game, hitting 19 in one over, Armstrong’s howling had no terrors for the batsmen, and he retired after bowling nine overs. Pellew gave Kenyon a life in the long field just before he spooned Macartney into Armstrong’s hands. The balance of the wickets went cheaply. Boddington pottered for 27 minutes for a single. Armstrongdropped an easy ekteli before he scored.

Marriott was vigorous while he lasted, but was missed on the boundary. The seventh wicket fell at SI, and the ninth at 87. The innings lasted 115 minutes.

Collins and Bards]ey scored freely on the leg side off Parkin and Cook. At 37 Taylor, a left-handed slow, relieved Cook, and Marriott replaced Parkin.
