RAILWAY CUT.
STATEAIENT BY MINISTERSOUTH ISLAND ALTERATIONS. Per Press Association. WELLIN'DON, August 3. An important announcement ot a somewhat drastic cut, especially in branch lino and suburban railway services in both Islands, was made by the IJon. D. IT. Guthrie, Acting Atinister of Railways. Tho cut commences on August 14, and lasts till the end of November, unless meanwhile traffic greatly improves. The high, rate of expenditure and the decline of railway traffic since April has made the curtailment of the train services a matter of necessity. The principal South Island alteration is that the second express Christchurch to Invercargill is to run on three days per week only. There are many changes in mid-South Island branch lines and suburban services.
