THE RANGER’S CAR.

To the Editor of “Timaru Herald.” Sir, —For those who take an interest in acclimatisation work, it is not hard to see beneath the surface of this motor-car for the ranger movement. If my surmise is correct, a part of this agitation is engineered by some disgruntled members in the background, wlio no doubt work on the feelings of a few genuine sports who are sincere in their desire to give our ranger as much comfort as possible. While that object of course is a good one, it is hardly necessary to remind our fellow sports that thjs Society is elected to provide game and sport in so far as their ability and their money allow, and to provide an efficient fast means of transport for their ranger; and in my opinion this end is admirably met by his speedy little Triumph motor-cycle. It is the duty of those we have elected to spend their fees in a manner which will do the greatest good, and I am sure that running a car for the ranger is not the way to do so. The running expenses of a motor-car would certainly he well over £2OO per year if the ranger were to work his job at all efficiently. Need any more be said unless it is a hint to the Society to organise a shag drive, and shoot a goodly number of those 200 shags that are working our Opihi riverbed at present. There are four well-known resting rocks on this river where these super-poachers go to digest their daily toll of trout. Were these ; four spots manned with good shots i some day simultaneouly, I am sure ! a great bag would result with benefit i to every one.—l am, etc., i OBSERVER. ! Waitohi, 2 Aug., 1921.
