Ongaroto Murder
RETRIAL COMMENCED. Per Press Association. HAMILTON, August 2. The second trial of Hakaraia Te Kalin for the murder of Richard Elliott at Ongaroto on Easter Sunday was commenced this morning. In the first trial on June 24 the jury disagreed. The Court was crowded, and the prisoner was showing no signs of distress. Dr Bertram gave evidence of tho examination of the body. Either of tK t-« wn-njc Rip m>ck would lie suffi •• cient to cause death. •■v ctioiiei:. counsel for accused, witness said that blond tests were generally regarded a« reliable, though not absolutely infallible. Evidence was given similar to the previous hearing regarding flic movements of deceased and accused, and tho hearing of shots fired.
Martha Coo!-: added that some time in March, before the murder, Te Kalin called at Cox’s store and. asked for goods on credit, promising to pay when he got his next pay. In reply to His Honour she said he had not paid yet.
