Getting the Wind Up BECAUSE the balance of trade between U.S.A. and New Zealand is against the Dominion, or, to put it plainer, because New Zealand has been importing far more from U.S.A. than she haß been exporting to that country, bankers nere find themselves compelled to curtail credits in the United States in an endeavour to rectify the most unsatisfactory conditions at present existing. Naturally this will “put the wind up” some of the American firms that have been dumping motorcars and tyres into New Zealand at an alarmingly increasing rate during the past few months, but it will be a good thing for the finances of the Dominion. The sovereign, or its equivalent, does not purchase many dollars’ worth of goods on the American market, as travellers find to their sorrow. This is all the more reason why we should stick to goods of British manufacture as far as possible. It is not necessary, for instance, for motorists to buy foreign motor tyre covers and tubes when they can choose from, many excellent British makes. Just to show how foreign tyres have been dumped into New Zealand of late it might be mentioned that during 1920 the imports of motor tyres from British countries showed an increase of £296,892 over 1919; whereas the imports from foreign countries showed an increase of £547,099. This is a pretty startling state of affairs, and should give every motorist ample food for thought, and it is hoped that the meal will do them good. A very largo proportion of the foreign tyres come from U.S.A., in fact, more tyres are imported from that country than from all British countries combined. By insisting upon British tyres motorists will be doing themselves service, inasmuch as they will be helping to stabilise trade within the Empire, and thus bring the cost of living within reasonable bounds.
