o . His Honour, Mr Justice Shu, and Mrs Sim Avent soutn yesterday from limaru by the first express. Mr F. D. Mosiey, S.ivi., the newlyappointed Magistrate for the Timtiru district, arrived here on Thursday and presided yesterday over the sitting of tho Court at Ashburton. Miss Flora M. Allan has resigned the position of Principal of the Otago Girls' High School after 30 years' serAice at the school. The many friends of Mrs Clowes Avill ba pleased to learn that after buiiig for many months in Nurse Shanlrs's Private Hospital she has now (.eon removed to Mrs Giles's, Otiritiri. The parishioners of Merivale met on Tuesday evening to farewell the Rev. Harold and Mrs Purchase, who are about to leave for Geraldine. The Vicar (the Rev. Archdeacon P. B. Haggitt) expressed his appreciation of the_ services of Mr Purchase in the parish, and his regret at losing him. The Rev. Canon Cocks and Mr W. C. Bean also spoke testifying to the fine Avork done by Mr and Mrs Purchase at Merivale. The former was presented with a well-filled wallet of notes, and the latter with a valuable opal ring, Mr Bean making the presentations on behalf of the parishioners. A Wellington Press Association message says that, the Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee met yesterday, Sir Robert Stout, Acting-Governor-Gcn-cral, presiding, and selected :i candidate for the special war scholarship offered by the Rhodes Trustees. The candidates Avere : —Auckland College, P. 0. Veale; Victoria College, .1. E. Brodie; Canterbury College, S. P. McCallum; Otago University, H. J. Ry. burn. Mr McCallum Avas selected.
