FOOTBALL.

YESIERDAY'S MATCHES. * Splendid weather prevailed for the continuation of competition games yesterday, and there were large attendances at the principal grounds. In the senior grade Star gained a liardlyivon but convincing victory over Celtic, nnd at Victoria I'ark Temuka scored n comfortable win over Old Boys. This leaves Temuka .at the head of the list with 14 championship points, Star and Celtic being next with 12 each, bub Star have a game outstanding with J-liwiroa, which under normal conditions they should bo able to win.

SENIOR. STAR 9 V. .CELTIC 3

Celtic kicked off with the sun at their backs, but facing an easterly breeze. From the first scrum Direen kicked through to Dickson, and Star carried over for a force. McDougall was caught offside in front of the goal nt the ensuing scriini, ..and J. Kane placed a nice goal. Celtic 3, Star 0. A long spell of loose, even play followed. . Clarke made a dash into Celtic territory, but P. Houlihan returned well, and nothing eventful happened until.Cooke had a couple of fruitless shots at goal from penalties. From some tight play near the Celtic line I I cad just failed to'get over, and alter Cooke had failed again at goal from a free Angland marked and Kane .kicked out to the centre. Tim next incident came from a kick by M. Houlihan. A.nnour tackled Dickson .and a hot Celtic rush swept tu Star's liue, McAllen just missing a score ill the corner. Clarke .and Collings burst through the Celtic ranks, and were going strongly when. Joyce pulled them up with amark. Joyce returned play lo Star's end, and Annear, Joyce and Kane put in a passing rush which looked promising, hut a wild transfer by Kane ended it, and Star were looking dangerous at halfway when Kane retrieved cleverly. Stewart and Collings led the Star forces to the Greens' 2-3, and Stewart made another dash which Joyce checked smartly, and Kane got touch at tho 20. Dickson almost brought disaster to his side by attempting a run, .and a. loose Celtic rush headed by Shea and McAllen * drove Star back to their line. Cooke threw a risky pass across and Kano snapped it, aucl Logan just averted .a score at the corner. In a succeeding passing bout the Celts lost the. ball and Star cleared their line. Cooke made an opening for his backs, but Logan held too long, and the Greens dashed back to the 25, and by another rush comellod Star to force. After some ragged phiv Collings got to Celtic's end, hub long passing lost Star a lot ol territory, which was inunediatelv re-

gainetl by a. Celtic rush breaking down in similar manner. Angland made a

break through, bub Coppin saved well, and a. lot or scrambling and speculating play of a fast nature ensued. Joyce and M. Houlihan lent variety to tlio proceedings by nearly finishing off a forward rush, but Cooke got in a line return, and Collings started :i spirited rush from which Logan almost scored. After a halt to allow two exhausted men to recover Angland was caught with his hands in the scrum and Cooke landed a clean goal. Celtic 3, Star 3. Celtic nvado things lively for the remaining two or three minutes, but at half time the scores were unaltered—Celtic 3, Star 3.

Kane returned the kick-off past the centre ag, but Head and Clarke at once dashed to the corner, and after some tight work Cooke threw across to Clarke. The wing got it at the second attempt, and just managed to ground the ball before knocking out the corner Hag. Cooke did not convert. Star t>, Celtic 3. Kane and Cooke each recovered brilliantly from difficulties of his ow nmaking, then Head initiated ■a. rush which went to Celtic's end. By long passing Star gave Coppin a chance, but ho was pulled down, and a pot by Dickson also just failed to bring points. Shea and Direen cleared Celtic's line from another assault, and the Greens went on to Star's ground, "here a rebounding kick enabled the Blues to force. Angland, Joyce, and Houlihan indulged in some "passing, but the defence was sound, and Kane did no good with a fairly easy shot from a penalty against Collings. The Celts kept tip the attack for some time, and Kane almost equalised from a free kick. .Joyce lost a lot of ground by a fumble, but regained it immediately. Then Star invaded the Greens' 23, but a lovely kick by Kane reversed matters, and a Celtic rush seemed assured of success when Cooke stopped ic with a splendid mark. Annear made a couplo of touchline runs, and the Celts followed them up with a smart piece of passing, but Itoper got half a yard in front of Houlihan's pass and paid the penalty for offside. Ivant, had another shot at goal from a free, then Leopold raised the siege by grabbing a pass offside, and Doull, Clarke, and Dickson kicked down' to Celtic ground, where obstruction of n defender ruined a fine chance. Cooke mishandled a pass, but used his .feet well, nnd Head kicked down to the corner Hag. Head marked from a throw forward and Cooke almost goaled, then M. Houlihan made 'a strong run. Dickson and Doull sent play back to the other end. Direen made a dash to midfield, but Logan beat Kane for the ball, and a lot of kicking ended in Doull again placing the Greens on the defensive. Loose work by Logan and Cooke placed the ■ Celtic line in jeopardy, and though Joyco saved well Cooke forced hira out at the corner, and from the throw in Fitzsimmons f forced his way over and scored. Cooke's kick went just outside the post. Star 9, Celtic 3. Houlihan followed and fielded a penalty kick taken by Kane,

but Ilobson and Collings replied effectively, and though Kane made a nice run just before the end .and left Celtic on the offensive, nothino- vital happened before time was called. Star 'keltic 3. Mr J. Harley was re-
