SPORTING.
SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.
A meeting of the S.C.J.C. Committee was held last night. Present— Messrs H. Lowry (president), A. Scott, H. Hay, L. Wood, H. Elwortry, It. S. Forsyth, and the secret-ay (C. S. Eraser). Apologies were received from Messrs A. S. Elworthy, E. H. Bisset, and Walter Baxter. Mr Algie's resignation was accepted, as he was leaving the district. A long discussion took place on the question of income tax, the Department having claimed six years arrears on the club's receipts. In the face of the fact that clubs already pay 5 per cent, on the totalisator turnover, Mr R. Sellars was appointed to represent the club at a conference with the Premier.
The following officials were appointed :—Vice-president, Walter Baxter; treasurer, Walter Baxter; judge, B-. H. Alworth; handicapper, J. E. Henrys; starter, R. E. Harley; clerk of scales, D. McKenzie; surgeon, Dr G-. H. Ussher; hon. vet. surgeon', H. E. Martin; lion', timekeeper, J. O'Leary; detective, F. O'Cbnnell; stewards, W. J. Bassett, Donald Grant, C. H. Gresson, D. E. Lewis. C. J,. OrbelL. C. 3ST. Orbell, T. R. Rhodes.
Committees were appointed as follows:
Finance.—President, A. S. Elworthy, Walter Baxter, R. S. Forsyth.
Ground.—President. H. Hay James Scott, R. H. Bissett. Programme—President, Walter Baxter. H EHorthy, H. Hay. Trustees.—President, H. Elworthy, H. Hay, E. R. Mackay. The work done at the Racing Conference was gone through seriatim, the president explaining all the alterations.
Sundry other -matters were taken in committee.
