Julv 12. fair George Clifford, president of the Aew Zealand Racnifr Conference, had booked a passage for Wellington by i i- i but the firemen declined to go to sea . with him and a A.r Rutherford on board. When Sir George Clifford was told of the men- s attitude.- his first inclination .was to stay on the ship and let matters take their course, but on second thoughts he decided to go ashore and save trouble on account of tihe many passengers : on board who had l important reasons for travelling. As Sir George left the ship the passengers cheered liim; the firemen making a counter-deirionstration. - Apparently the firemen declined to sail with Sir George Clifford and Mr Rutherford for .the reason that tliey are racehorse owners, hut there appears to be some mistake about Mr .Rutherford, for it isiinderst-oodthat no niember of the well-known' racing family of that name was on board the Mokoia, '""It looks as if Sir George Cliffordwill not- be able to preside fat the New Zealand Racing Conference in "Wellington on Thursday, wHeij one'of the
