FAREWELL PRESENTATION. DR. AND MRS PATERSON. A representative gathering of residents of Pleasant Point township and a wide surrounding district assembled in the Oddfellows' Hall last Friday evening, to' make presentations to Dr C. A. arid Mrs Paterson, who recently -removed to Timaru after residing for * .many years at Pleasant Point, where Dr Paterson, the only medical practitioner there, earned the esteem of everyone by his sympathetic and successful treatment of his patients, and Mrs Paterson had made herself equally popular. A musical programme, contributed to by Mrs Grossman. Misses Bishop, Laurenson, and Alice Bishop, and Mr Carson, was interspersed with the speeches. Mr J. Maze presided, and " after stating the purpose of the subscribers, asked Dr and Mrs Paterson to accept a silver, tea and coffee service as a mark of the esteem in -which they were held, and eulogised the services they had both rendered to the district. Mr G. Oozier spoke in high praise of Dr Paterson as a doctor and a public man. The gathering testified to the doctor's popularity, and to Mrs Paterson he extended thanks for her devotion to Red Cross work. Mr Laurenson ralso spoke in glowing terms of the work of Dc and Mrs Paterson, particularly in connection with patriotic functions, and the great service the doctor rendered durine the epidemic. Mr James Stewart then asked Br Paterson to accept a club chair, Which he Imped he would live many years to ew Mr Stewart said he had mown Pleasant Point when there was no docor there, and he had been at a good many send-offs, but he had never been present at a gathering with greater pleasure than that night. Ihe Rev. S. Hinson referred* to the noble work of the medical profession and congratulated Dr of b ?s work as a member of it ' Mr Stewart, then read the following address, which he handed to Dr ™- enson amid loud cheers:— ' fX ¥ d ? -es sing you on -behalf of you r friends m general in the large district .which as medical practitioner you have served so we]] during the past eleve n years, and we wish to express to I you our regret that you are leaving the district and our appreciation of tlie manner m which you have discharged the duties resting upon you. "We know well the work of a medical man in a large, and scattered district such as this is by no means easy, and that it makes great demands upon the strength and patience of the doctor. You came to live here, in 1908 and it was soon found that you were able and readv to respond to the calls made upon your skill and energy. Your patients learned that they could trust you and they were treated by you with the ability and kindness which generally characterises the members of your profession. "We wish to emphasise the latter because we know that large numbers of people are able to testify to the sympathy and kindness which, marked your relations with them. We trust that God's blessing will rest upon you and your family and that you will live many years to continue your noble work of healing." The address is signed on behalf of the subscribers by J. Maze, F,. M. Halstead, E. Doilimore, George Oozier, T. Laurenson. A. G. Crossman,' Stanley Hinson and James Stewart. Dr Paterson on rising to reply was received with great applause and the singing of "He ; s a Jolly Good Fellow." He said he could not find words to express his thankfulness. Many kind things had been said, but rea.lly he had only done his duty. In referring to thy epidemic, he thanked all those who had helped, making special reference to the untiring services of Sister Bishop. In conclusion, he said he could aspire them that in his successor, Dr Milne, they had a practitioner with a wide experience. , Mr Maze nncl Mr Hinson both welcomed Dr jVPlne. and p sumptuous supper, served by the ladies, closed a yery happy gathering.
