A start had been made with tlhie survey of tlhe route, 'and the poles .-ordered were only suitable for the transmission line between Coleridge and Timaru, so that they were not likely to bo used for any other purpose. The Council shonlld keep in touch with the M.P.'s for the district and ask them to keep the Government up to their promise. The Chief Electrical Engineer had invited members of the Council to visit' Lake CVerklge, preferably in the spring. Th° sanitary inspector reported in detail on inspections made since the previous meeting of .the Council. Premises in .27 streets' had been inspected, and 04 notices served to abate nuisances. The proprietors had been notified to 'remove dangerous goods which wer P stored witbrtnt a license in premises in Haves Street. | The Bus Engineer reported op work in bis denartment. This was all' of a' routine character. . /FINANCE COMMITTEE. A letter was received from the Auditor-General inquiring what statutory authority Ihe Council had for payments to the Employees' Sick-Benefit Society .—-Rieply forwarded ' that* the payments had been made to obviate the necessity for granting leave of absence on pay. ' . ' Mr McNab applied for an increase of £5 per annum for looking after the town clock.—Recommended. ' The South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board forwarded particulars of tho Board's estimated income and expenditure for the current year. • . Quotations were received for printing the muncipal accounts for the year ended:—"Tiniaru Post Coy. £1 15s per page, "Timaru Herald" Coy. £1 15s 6d t per page. The first named offer was recommended for aeeeptanoa. The recommendation in regard to the town clock was held over till the estimates are considered. The rest of the report was adopted. WORKS AND SANITATION COMMITTEE. This Committae reported having considered the reports of the Borough Engineer and ftanitarv Inspector. The District Health" Officer forwarding certificates condemning two buildings, one in Sutter Street, and th-i

other in Avenue Road. ,;■ Recommendation: That the owners should demolish theso- buildings within four weeks. ~ .;».. The Timaru Harboui- Board applied for 200 c. yds. of nietal for Eraser ■Street.—To be granted, v at7s 6d per cubic yard in bins at tho quarry. Recommendations: That the' electric light be installed at the Council's stables and cottage- in High..'Street at a, cost of £22 5s for the former^, and £l7 os, for the latter. ' ", That the Borough Engineer report as to the cost of installing, an oat crusher and/motor at the Stables.: ■-- : . That tenders be called for' painting No.- 3 bus. A schedule of ordinary pay and overtime paid to each driver and conductor was submitted. Mi- F. Baker offered to demonstrate the suitability of a Ford one -ton' chassis for bus purposes.—Received. Adams Ltd. quoted two Stewart onetoii chassis at £550 each, less 10 pelcent. —Received. Inglis Bros, wrote extending their offer of two Clydesdale chassis till the! end of the month. I Recommendation; That the Committee's recommendation of April 9 and May .7, recommending the purchase of two Clvdesdale chassis be adopted. Councillor Doyle dissented. ; . . ELECTRIC LIGHT. ; This, Committee reported as follows: \ Recommendation: That light rise and fall fitting to the value-"of about £35 be indented ' through Frances Chapman and Son and Deaketi, London . That current be supplied for lighting purposes till 8 a.m. in lieu of 7 p.m. on Sunday mornings. ■ The reconimendations for increases in salary were held over till the estimates ' are considered. The rest of the report was adopted. WATERWORKS AND RESERVES Miss Watson.wrote asking for a reduction of rent for th e Caroline Bay Hall for her dancing class (rent 12s 6d per evening).—No recommendation. The South Canterbury Rugby Union wrote asking to ba allowed'to "us© the Century Baths as a dressing room. — Heid over. Mrs Bagakaw, lion, secretary Aorangi Croquet (Tub, wrote asking for the use of lawns arid pavillion on Anzac Reserve. _Recommendation: That the application -bo granted on the same terms as last year. The Timaru Fir 0 Board wrote relative to tho water' supply to stores etc.—Held over."' LIBRARY ' COMMITTEE.This Committee recommended:— That Councillor Hughson l>9 appointed permanent 'chairman, and that meetings be held at 3 p.m., th e third Monday in each month: That a vote of thanks bo accorded Messrs Green and Young for their past diligent services as members of the Library Committee.
