Mr W. H. Hagger, Conciliation Com r missioner, passed through Timaru yesterday on his way. to Dunedin. The Mayor of Timaru (Mr W. Raymond) returned to Timaru yesterday from the Town Planning Conference at Wellington. Yesterday was the anniversary of the birth of Queen Marv, who was born on May 26, 1867. The New Zealand ensign was flown over the Timaru Post Office in honour of the occasion. Mr Alexander Barron, formerly chairman of the Board of Land Purchase Commissioners and Under-Secre-tary for Crown Lands died at Wellington, aged 79 years. As the tenure of the appointment of Sir Francis Bell to the Legislative Council would expire <m July 10 next, being seven years from the date of his call, and as it is possible that the Governor-General may not have returned to New Zealand from Samoa by that date, Sir Francis lb as'resigned the seat and has been reappointed to the Council.
