A party of fifteen Bolshevik soldiers rushed Volkonsky's house, and shot Prince Boris before hig mother's eyes while at breakfast. Volkonsky and his daughters, Princesses Natashia and Matiana, escaped to a neighbouring town, where they remained unmolested for six weeks. Then the Bolsheviks cut Volkonsky's throat, killed Natashia with spears and smashed in Matiana's head.
