FAREWELL AT KAKAHU
OLD SETTLERS LEAVING. A farewell social was tendered in Kakahu school to Mr and Mrs Smith, who are leaving to take up a new farm, after residing in tho district, for 25 years. Tho school was tastefully decorated for tho occasion, and it was veiy gratifying to see fo many old settlors who had come long distances io bid. the guests of the evening farewell. After dancing and supper, Mr Wilson (chairman of the school committee) read letters of apology from Mr Barker. Mr Bruce, and Mr O. S. Thompson for their absence*. Ho spoke of iSia good qualities of Mr and Mrs Smith as friends and neighbours, and theni called on Mr J. W. Jones,' the oldest) resident in'the district, io say a few words.
Mr Jones presented Mr an 3 Mrs Smith with a 'oeautiful oak sideboard from Kakalin residents and friends. 1!o said that he had known ~them for a ioug time, and had always found them kind and considerate, cspeciallv in cases of sickness and trouble. They had always assisted in anvtlung for tho good of the district-, and ho was snro that all their old friends would miss them sorely. Ho wished ilicm every sik-'-o.cs in their fui»;to homo.
Mr Stephens and Mr Campbell also spoko in r-omnlimeniary terms of Mr apd M*-s Smith.
M»- Smith thanked tho oomnnnv for iho handsome present, and said lie did not know what thev had done to d?rorvo it. bur as thry uoro not going far, ]i>- hoped thev would look in and have a cup of tea anv times wlicu passing.
Some vocal iienis were given, and tho iraili:-riiig rlosc-! with >3i-?ers for tho Smith family. Tho ladies of the nisi rid provided the refreshments, which were all tint could be desired.
