-,:. PRODUCE MARKET, p CHRISTCHURCH REPORT, Lf. Per Press Association. -' T '" CHRISTCHURCH, August 24. „' ere is nothing doing in wheat, the «'-. 'e crop now having apparently tged hands. J . j. he oats market has firmed although giere is little,-'feaiu. available- with ghich to do business. Stocks in store '•h very small, as merchants have sold st of their holdings. Seed Gartons, ..jigernuis and Duns arc worth up to st;: at country stations, and the same price has been paid for a line of milling Gartons and Algerians. Owing to the scarcity of shipping a considerable quantity of oat sheaf chaff sold to go North has been resold. At the same time there is still a good inquiry for prime bright chaff, and prices are firm, up to £7 having been offered. It is reported that supplies ftf Marlborough .chaff are now exhausted.

There is a- good demand for seeds, and it would appear as if there will be a fairly large sowing made this season. Clover seeds are not very plentiful. There is inquiry from the North Island for cocksfoot, but the stocks held are very light, as the merchants' supplies were heavily drawn upon to fill the considerable demand caused hv the North Island bush lires earlier in the year.

The potato market advanced during I *he week. It is reported that sales ; ..•'«. made at £8 10s to £9 at countrv stations, but the demand is now weaker ! and £8 to £8 os is only offered. The rise was apparently due to tho anxietv \ of merchants to get supplies-shipped-be'-' fore the large arrivals expected from ' Australia and now- due. reached port. The high prices lately ruling have not resulted in many more offering, for as is usually the case when there is a. sharp- rise in any' ]i n c of "produce, growers are inclined to hold, and it is roportfcd that even £9 -at country' stations was refused a day or two ago.
