WAIMATE BOROUGH ELECTION.
FIVE OLD AND THREE NEW COUNCILLORS ELECTED.
The by-election for eight members.of the Waimate BoVough Council to fill the places of those who resigned tools place yesterday, and resulted in the return of five of the former Councillors and three new ones. Very keen interest was takeh in the election, at which 784 voters went to tho poll. There were 38 informal votes, ana there are 1265 names on the roll. The eight who were returned are as follows (the asterisk indicating old Councillors) *W. E. Evans 439 *G. W. Collett qM . *J Tompkins 413 W. L. Hay 406 *F. W. Jones 403 R. A. Nicol 377 J. At the declaration of the poll last night all the candidates with the exception of Mr Berry, who was not present, spoke. The general tenor <rf their remarks conveyed the impression thai they intended to sink all differences and work amicably w.th the Mayor. The Mayor (Mr Dash) thanked the people for having given him the new Councillors, and said that though lie would have preferred all new men ho was not dissatisfied with tho result.
