WRITTEN UNDER AIR RAID.
, —♦ ' i A LETTER FROM HOME. , A Timaru resident supplies ■ extracts from a Loudon letter:: —"i am smarting a leuber during the interval of an airraid ; eVideiaiy, _ like- last time, they are' coming in detachments,' • and. we have had wo so far, and have warm ooats «to. handy, bub hope the guns ■won't get too close and that we oaia say tip here in peace instead of migrate ing into the basement". . ■.■'". This morning I went to about our sugar tickets. They have now, we think, go« the thing well organised; each person will have his own' ticket, and will get it from a shop, or if' he goes away, he can take his ticket witjh him, and by means of coupons at the post office, get •it from some grocer where he is staying. Pefblaps tea, butter .etc. may be dealt- in the- same way (guns agam!) and then supplies can be distributed equally. Shopping gets very difficult; some things impossible to get, but how well off we are in comparison with the Allies! "We are rationed £lb ■each per week for sugar, and I feel in clover.j as latterly we got lXerfiSly none sometimes. If every one would play fair voluntarily it would be all right, but you can't get it, and really we are quite well off, and have all we need; it really doesn't matter running short of things", for it makes you manage with something else, and 1 the brea-1 is rationed, but it is difficult to calculate cereals etc. I am getting a good deal from th£y send roundl daily; • boy and girl come. It's wonctorful what the girls do. . . . The bugles soiinded l about 10 p.m. ('All clear' signal). We hear ib has been bad in some parts."
