I The position of Secretary to the Education Department, wliiLto has been vacant for some time, has been filled by tlio Public Service (Jomm.ssijon-er by the appointment of Mr Alexander Bell, M.A. ; Mr Bell, who is a native of the j Geraldine distinct, is 46 years of age, ' pnd has had nearly 30 years' experience iu lmxJortant positions in almost every department of the education service. As a pupil iui primary and secondary Bc'hools and "as a university student Mr Bell gained many prizes and distinctions, including Education Board Scholarships, "the gold miodal as dux of the Timaru High School, a university senior scholarship, and tho M.A. degree •withi first class honours in mathematics and mathematical physics. As a teacher he had experience in all classes of primary schools andj gained rapid promotion, his last appointment being that of headmaster of the Timaru South Scliool. He was appointed assistant inspector at the age of 28. He was for ever eleven years a teacher, and thirteen years secretary and assistant inspector to "iihe South Canterbury Education Board. About five years ago Mr 801 l whs selected from a greafo numbpr of applicants for the dual position of secretary of th© Southland Education ;vnd TTigh Sshoo 1 Boards. Three years ago he relinquished liis position in Southland for an npnointment .invthe head office of +.li;o Education Department in Wellington, where his pret'ons experience proved r>f great value.
