CHINESE LABOUR.

To tli© Editor of the "Timaru Herald." fc>!ir,—l beg to be allowed a small space in your paper lo endorse some or tlio remarKs made by Air toherwin, ot 1' airlie, 111 a letter xo the "Timaru Herald" of the Utli inst., ou Cninest labour. 1 have very much, pleasure iu upholding Air Snerwm in statements made by him to your paper. It is about time steps were taken to stop the black races from coming to NewZealand. It is not as though there is not sufficient- labour in New Zealand. If the employers would only advertise when a vacancy occurred they would receive many willing replies. At the present time there are a good many of our returned boys who cannot find employment of any kind. Is there any reason why vacancies are being filled by Chinamen, while many of our boys who have been, at the Front, done their bit, and returned home cannot find employment? Then again, are the Second Division men going to leave their wives and children to go away and fight, and come back to find employment of any kind. If I myself have returned back here some months ago, and have not been able to find employment of any kind. If some patriotic fanner who was in need of a labourer liad advertised, I would have readily offered my services. Tlicro aro_ dozens of returned men in the same position as myself. Apart from returned soldiers, there aro a good many married men with families seeking work. New Zealand is known throughout the world as G-od's Own Country, but if Chinese labour is encouraged I >am sure it will be no benefit to the country. Trusting that some abler pen than mine will uphold these statements.—l am, etc., RETURNED SOLDIER. Timaru, August Bth.
