AMUSEMENTS.

PICTURES AND VAUDEVILLE. The entrance to tho Theatre Royal last night was s f rewn with confetti in honour of the betrothal of Gloria, the charming heroine of '-Gloria's Ro- [ tnancay" the concluding chapter of I which was shown last night. From | the commencement there has been great enthusiasm shown towards this serial, and last night patrons were waiting outside the Theatre at 6.45. The chapter is a fitting one for the senal's conclusion, and was greeted with much applause. An extremely fine ' pair of Gazettes was screened, and some of tho snaps showed the missing airman, Lieutenant Robinson, V.C., wounded soldiers building hutments in France, and an array of interesting topics in connection with the international crisis. The leading film was entitled "The Weaker Sex," and it must rank with the Triangle Com- j pany's finest productions. The cast in- i eludes some o; the best artists on the I screen, showing Louise Glaum, Charles Kay and jjoromy -Uaium ui wte leaomg roies. Tile story in brief tells how tue son of the district attorney ;alls in io\-p witli a scheming cabaret dancer, who iures him into a trap by which she hopes to secure some ot his wea.ih. The trick woiks admirably till a certain stago is reached, when it ends fatally. The young man is called before a judge to answer a charge of murder, but his adopted mother brings him out safely. The acting is wondorful, and is introduced in a manner that holds interest. Tho villain's part is a strong one, and Ray is given every opportunitv -to dis-p-ay his powers of acting, which are recognised as some of the best seen. Tho despair of the women in the house o? the young man, is realistically portrayed, and the young felb/w was repeatedly applauded. The part of the father is done all justice. Rose and Dell, the clever pair of cyclists, again do.ightod the audience with tho : r "art, and will appear to-night, and fina.llv at-_ the matinee on Saturday. Their trick cycling- orovo immensely popular with the children.

THE GRAND. Mary Miles Minter has undoubtedly achieved the popularity which it was predicted would tall to her lot, and she easily ranks with the popular Mary Prkford. The large audience at the Grand last night was no doubt drawn there because of Miss Minter's compelling attractions as a screen actress. She figured last night as Duleie, in "Dulcie's Adventure," and it must be said that she was seen in a delightful role. She is so innocent that she does not know that she has the blue blood of a Randolph in her veins, and in consequence her prim Aunt Netta has to be continually correcting her. But for this troublesome aunt, who is always spying on her bright young ward, Mary declared on one occasion that "she would have been engaged." Aunt Netta holds up her hands in horror, but later schemes to get Mary married to a man whom she minks will bring great wealth to the family, but, who subsequently turns out to be a high society thief. This nas separated Mary from her genuine lover, but there are startling revelations as her wedding to the society/scoundrel is in progress, and she regains her happiness. Tho scenery is very fine and some pretty bird studies are introduced, as is also an exciting pig hunt by a contingent of school children. Children at the matinee on Snturdav will lik* this picture, but still more will thov enjoy the Fox comedy which was shown ln.st nicht. in wh'ch fh?re are some truly stor+Vna- situations w ; th motor cars and motor biovoles as they take part in a chase full of l ; ghtninw-h'kf' n.ovpment, A Pretty scenic completed tne programme.
