(By 'Half-back.) POSITIONS OF TEAMS. v ■ .5* -S i I (5 a m «' S< e, s up r 2 £>- >• o O Q*. JG Ph IS -p P4 (no Geraldme 4,22 0 18 23 2 High School ... 3 ,2 1 0 25 12 2 Star ... 3'2'"-l 0 13 6 2 Zingari ... 4 1 3 0 17 35 1 Tho competitions were'.advanced another stage on Thursday in fine but threatening weather. The day -was one of surprises, as Star, after having ionieivliat the betternoi: tlie play, lowered the High School .team's laurels,;" inflicting their first defeat of the season, and Zingarijdefeated; Geraldino. Ati Ger-: aldine by five ally anticipated that High School would beat Star by their combined back play, bus this was not the caSio. From the start the Star forwards played a hust-' lino: game, being well sup|>orted by their rearguard.' The result was tliafc the School backs could not get going, and there was not, during'the-whole game, one passing rush in which all" the backs look part. Star are to be congratulated on their display, and they fully deserved their- win. From the ! kick-off it could be seen that, they- were lout to upset the backs' passing i j rushes," and this they succeeded, al- i | though at times some of tlieir fonvaius i got off-sid,e,-- and were -very fortunate in escaping- .the- notice ctF the referee. .Star -on last--Thursday's performance will be a stiff proposition "for any team in the competition. 1 - Jlober.tson, at -full-back, ■ vplayed - a' ,£ery ; fijie game. His: defence >was . sound, andhis line-kicking- very sure. • "It'-is -to.-.be| hoped-- . that ]:is ankle --ivill. nob prevent /liim from playing- 'agaan thiss.cason, as his ; loss will be severely folfc, and his place hard to fill: Neither of ,the three-quarters had. much attacking work, .but their defence was sound. .Home, at-centre, played an excellent game both in attack and defence. He staved off: tome of School's forwardrushes in line style. Cooke Bros, at five-eigkrtihs both played well F. Cooke's '•try- being a fine effort. They' did not give the School bac£s much time to think about passing, and were on to.i them almost as soon as they had the ball. at half,' gave his best exhibition so far, and played very well indeed. He -is youug and ligh't for a half-back, but ho was quite equal to his v. ork on Thursday. - The' forwards all played a, good spoiling game. Their combined play • was well carried -out, and their loosp- rushes took somo/stopping. Rqbsoh and Feejy showed up prominently.- The latter, however, played off-side too . much and / should have been penalised for it. Star's display, showed a considerable; all-round - irnprovenient, and evidently they have been putting, in some hard - training. High School , did not play nearly j their game of the previous week. This, to a large extent., can be put down to tho opposing forwards spoiling their back play. The forwards stood up" well to the heavier pack, and they all play T ed good games, taking into considera-. tion what tliey were up against. Craw-, ford and Taylor were- always to be noticed where the hard work' was. Buxton, at full-back, was not at aII at home, his handling being weak. Sliackleton, on the wing, did not have; many opportunities, and the one that came his way lie made the best of and put in a .good run, but Robertson was not found to be wanting. j\[. l?ahey. on the other wing, did a lot of good defensive work. Scott did not get many chances. He nut. in. a great deal of hard graft. His passing could be improved on. J. Falley, at five-eighths," was very safe. He did some excellent line-kicking. Eothwell cut in very nicely on occasions. He should not wait when there is no one with him, but should go straight ahead. He might have scored once if he had done this instead'of looking for someone to pass to. "Williams, at half, had a busy day against the Star forwards, but be came, through with credit. Both he and Roth well were hampered by some of the opposing forwards playing off-side, on. occasions. Takiug the game on tho whole it seemed that Star had a day out, and .School were a bit- off colour. Congratulations lo Zingari on their first win of the season. Geraldine's defeat was more surprising' than that of High School. Zingari apparently have been putting more energy into their work, and they have been fully rewarded. They are an improving side, and their game against High School on Thursday should be well worth seeing. Buckley for Zingari scored two trie!, and played a brilliant- game. Horgan, as usual, and Spillane were the pick of tb« Gera.ldine players. The following are the fixtures and referees for Thursday:— Seniors. High School v.: Zingari, -No. 1 Athletic, 3 p.m., Mr Smith.
