SWIMMING AND LIFE SAVING.

SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS. The swimming championships for South Canterbury primary schools were competed for last week, with the following results:— Girls' Championship.—Fanny Wallace (Main School) 24 points, I; Lily Loomes (South) 12 points, 2. The winner was an easy first in the four events, 25, 50, 75,' and 100 yards. Boys' Championship.—R. Stewart (South) 21 points, 1; E.' Hooke (Main) 15 points, 2; -C. Leopold (Main), i points, 3. These events ' were keenly contested. Stewart won the 50, 75> and 150 yards events in 36 4-6 sec, '57 l-ssec, and 136 3-ssec respectively; Hooke -won the 100 yards in 87 2-ssec. MAIN SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS. | The Main. School ohampionships were also decided on the above races, witil tho result that Fanny Wallace letained the girls' championship, with Ins Watts second; while the boys' medal went to E. Hooke, with C. Leopold as runner-up. On Tuesday afternoon nine boys were examined for certificates in life saving, in connection with classes held in4his branch of swimming at the Main School. Mr C. Bryant, a member of the Christchurch branch of the Royal Life Saving Society, kindly undertook to test_ tho candidates. He put, them through the land drill, showing the various methods of "release" and "rescue," as well as the Schafer method of resuscitation. Afterwards the boys performed the required tests in the water, and acquitted themselves well. As a result of the examination five boys will be awarded proficiency- certificates Cecil Leopold, Ernest Hooke, Raymond Bracefield, Hector Mcintosh, Arthur Craven. The following gained the elementary certificate:—Arthur Hathaway, Fred. Shewan. Prizes for excellence -were awarded to Cecil Leopold, Ernest Hooke,, and .Arthur Hathaway. The teachers and pupils wish to express thanks to Mr -Bryant for the trouble he took in the examination of candidates, and also to the Timaru bwimmmg Centre for the donation of • pr^f s m con nection with the class.
